I’m not typically into cafes, especially ones with such a big emphasis on breakfast foods, yet Chez Dre Bakery & Cafe and South Melbourne is now one of my favourite places in the area with a few things on the menu that I absolutely love. Scroll to the end of this article for the full Chez Dre menu.

Inside Dining at Chez Dre South Melbourne

It has a spacious indoor area with lots of large tables for large groups. A lot of people seem to come here to work as well as if it were a Starbucks.

Chez Dre also features a very cute outdoor dining area with fake grass underfoot and what I assume to be  retractable roof systems.

The first time I went was with my colleagues from work Arass and Hakim (pictured above) who introduced me to this eating spot near the South Melbourne market I was so impressed that I had my partner and son come and meet me there a few weeks later.

As most dishes include egg or fish, which I don’t eat I opted for 3 side dishes.

French Fries with Truffle and Pecorino Cheese

These were perhaps the best fries I’ve ever had. They were very generous with the truffle and cheese as well.

Halloumi with Lime Wedge and Pork & Fennel Sausage

Whilst the pork & fennel sausage was fine, the halloumi really stood out. I think they must have deep-fried it, much better than grilled.

Seasonal Avocado with Poached Eggs & Toast

This is what Hakim had, it seems to be his favourite thing there.

Crispy Skin Trout

Arass had the trout and whilst I don’t eat fish, I do appreciate the presentation here!

Coffee Art

I think it’s a swan.

Babyccino

When I returned with my family, my son had his first babyccino and he loved it!

Above is the main menu as it was in 2022. The prices and availability might change and I will not be keeping this updated, but it gives you a pretty good idea of what to expect!
