For the past few days, I’ve constantly seen ads on TV promoting the new Pepperoni Deluxe pizza at Domino’s in Australia. The ad boasts 100 pieces of pepperoni per pizza for $9.99. This sounded too good to be true. The Domino’s Australia Facebook page was even creating dank memes about it.
Domino’s Pepperoni Deluxe – 100 Slices of Pepperoni Meme
As a big fan of pepperoni pizza, this caught my attention and has been playing on my mind ever since. Today at work, I have finally pulled the trigger since there’s a Domino’s about 1km away from my office.
What is the Domino’s Pepperoni Deluxe?
Domino’s Pizza in Australia already has 3 types of pepperoni pizzas (plus a few size variations. Big Pepperoni New Yorker, Pepperoni and Loaded Pepperoni (50% more). The difference between those and the new Pepperoni Deluxe is that this pepperoni is actually different. The Domino’s app describes this as “topped to the edge with 100 pieces of new cupped & crispy pork & fennel pepperoni”. These pieces are much smaller than the usual pepperoni used on the other pizzas.
Does Domino’s Pepperoni Deluxe really have 100 slices?
Before ordering, I actually checked with a friend who works at a Domino’s and he confirmed that no one is actually counting out 100 slices. It’s just a big cup full of tiny pieces of pepperoni. I ordered two of these with my coworker Jack, and went to pick them up. In the car on the way back to the office, Jack counted about 80 slices on each of these. As the sauce is also a similar colour to the meat itself, it might be possible that some were missed, but I find it likely that we both received fewer than 100 slices each.
How Much is the Pepperoni Deluxe Pizza?
If you order it through the app and pick it up yourself, it is $9.99 AUD. I checked how much one delivered would be and it was $20.69 and I think that includes delivery fees, but you must spend $22 or higher for delivery. As a new and interesting item, this appears to be their latest vehicle to drive customers into their app’s ecosystem rather than going through Uber Eats or other third parties.
Conclusion
I think this was a pretty good pizza for $9.99. I think the marketing gimmick worked well to hook me in. The pepperoni was crispy but I think I prefer their regular larger size pepperoni and would have preferred taking their original Loaded Pepperoni concept and pushing it further instead of changing to this smaller ingredient.
The peporoni they use for the Deluxe pizza is pork and fennel peporoni.
Maybe this is a ruse to change to a cheaper peporoni.
Hmm…
It is not as tasty. Not as oily. Different tasting. But if enough people love it then they can change to the cheaper peporoni without us noticing….
Well, not me. I love my peporoni and especially the one they have at dominoes
