Unfortunately, some time has passed since I took these photos so I can’t go into as much detail as I’d normally like to.
Mexican Restaurants in Werribee
For much of my childhood, it was very hard to get good Mexican food around Werribee. We used to have a Taco Bill, which whilst probably the oldest Mexican chain in Australia, it was always far from authentic. This was later replaced by Salsa Mexican Restaurant, which has never struck me as much better, but could be a good family alternative to the newer ones. In recent years we’ve quickly had few new higher-end Mexican restaurants appear around Watton Street Werribee. The new ones included Bobby Dre’s (now closed), with Casa Cantina, Village Cantina, Mex-Tex Chicken & Grill and now Hecho en Mexico Werribee opening up.
For those looking for good Mexican food in Werribee’s main street, we are now spoilt for choice and that’s quite exciting for me as I love Mexican food. However, as a dad with two young kids, some of these newer places do not appear to be kid-friendly. So I’ve not actually tried them yet.
Hecho en Mexico however, is a family-friendly Mexican restaurant in Werribee, so my family of 4 went with my mum for dinner. Her shout.

Given that Hecho en Mexico Werribee is in the former location of the impressively decked out Truckstop Deluxe, I think I was expecting something a little stronger in theming. The theme is a mix of Day of the Dead and Mexican Wrestling.
The space where the old truck used to be is now additional seating a little merch and a hot sauce stand, which sells Melbourne Hot Sauce, which is pretty good hot sauce, I’ve had a bottle or two over the years at home.
Some neon signs decorate the walls.

The Mexi Mexi chips were great (Fried beer-battered chips seasoned with Mexican herbs & oregano. Served with garlic aioli). Charlie loved them. As usual, he was far more interested in these than his actual meal.

Kayla and I each had a chimichanga, and they were great. They had good sauces and the ingredients seemed to be of a good quality. I haven’t had a chimichanga in years. It’s never been an option at any of the older Mexican chains that I’ve been to.
I believe this was the La Paloma cocktail with Del Maguey Vida Mezcal. This contains fresh lime, grapefruit, black lava salt rim and a choice of tequilas. I believe this was cheaper than expected due to a Tuesday special. The presentation was quite impressive with dried fruit on top. It was good!
My mum had a mix-and-match combination of 3 tacos. As they were mostly fish or seafood ones I didn’t pay much attention to them. The soft taco shells they use here are great though.
The kids’ tacos looked amazing, but I think the sauces and garnishes were too intimidating for Charlie, so he wasn’t interested at all. I think going forward, we will need to be more careful at restaurants ensuring that any kids’ meals have minimal garnishing.
Overall, we were all very satisfied and would definitely return here with the kids!
