On a rainy October day in South Melbourne, sitting here in my office I am hungry. I don’t really know what to order from Uber Eats today. It’s too cold to go out and walk anywhere, so I’ll get food delivered. It occurs to me that I’ve probably never had sushi delivered, so I check out what’s available. Amongst the tabs of different South Melbourne sushi restaurants I can order online from, I see one that has some unusual Japanese fusions. I knew I had to try it and to order a few things so I can save some for lunch tomorrow.
Philly Cheese Steak
I’ve never seen sushi or hand rolls with cheese before and having tried the Philly Cheese Steak Roll from Maki-Mix. Wow. Just wow. This has got to be one of the best sushi-like products I’ve had in my life. I’m really, really impressed with it.
This features premium wagyu beef grilled with a classic sauce, siracha-mayo, caramelised onion, grilled capsicum, spring onion and melted cheese. I am having trouble describing it apart from being a soft mix all the ingredients mentioned, plus it also included a little soy sauce tube and blob of wasabi. Again, soy sauce and wasabi are not things I’ve really had with cheese before, but it works amazingly.
The cheese is not an overpowering flavour, but it works surprisingly well.
Sushi Taco
Another amazing creation at Maki-Mix is this sushi taco. I don’t eat fish or seafood, so I got the chicken one and wow. Again this is incredible. The nori sheet makes a perfect soft taco substitute. It does not have the floury or salty taste of a typical Mexican taco.
Conclusion
This is now my favourite sushi restaurant in South Melbourne for sure. I’ll be going back and bringing my friends one day soon.
