Since there’s been a lot of talk about Cadbury Vegemite chocolate lately, it reminded me of Australia Day 2015, where Pizza Hut had its own Vegemite pizza.
Pizza Hut’s Vegemite was called “Mitey Stuffed Crust” pizza to avoid copyright issues, although it seems that it was endorsed by Kraft. I thought the Vegemite pizza was actually a pretty clever marketing technique. Regardless of whether it was any good or not, it’s the kind of thing people would want to try once anyway, just to see for themselves what Vegemite pizza is like. The same goes for the chocolate.
What is Pizza Hut’s Mitey Stuffed Crust Pizza?
It’s basically their usual cheese stuffed crust pizza but with Vegemite in it. If you are not familiar with Pizza Hut’s stuffed crust pizza, it’s basically just a fatter hollow crust that is full of mozzarella cheese. Both the Mitey Stuffed and regular stuffed crust were $3 extra (Mitey Stuffed is no longer available).
Since Pizza is usually salty anyway and because Vegemite goes well with cheese, it worked out pretty good. However, my friends didn’t like it. It’s possible that the Vegemite was a bit too strong (you normally spread it pretty thin) but I liked it. If it comes out again I’d probably get it again. I actually liked it better than Pizza Hut’s Doritos Crust pizza they had a while back. Thinking about it now actually makes me want it, even though I just had dinner and I’m not hungry.
Whilst I’m on the topic of Pizza Hut, I want to draw attention to how good you can make it. When you order online, you can add extra toppings (I’m sure you can over the phone, but I like ordering online because there’s sometimes special discounts or deals that you won’t hear about over the phone. Here’s my order:
- Large Loaded Pepperoni (base price is $9.95, it has extra cheese and pepperoni compared to the regular one, don’t get them confused)
- Mitey Stuffed Crust [add $3]
- Double Hot Spices (Chilli) [free]
- Double garlic [free]
That’s pretty much my standard there (with regular stuffed crust instead of the Vegemite). Even if you don’t like Pizza Hut, you’d find it hard to say that’s not better than most other pepperoni pizzas you’ve had (with the regular cheesy stuffed crust)
Vegemite Pizza Controversy
I just noticed some articles about Kraft forcing Pizza Hut to pull its ad for this, as it showed foreign people not enjoying it, which I thought was actually super accurate and amusing to see in an ad. Australians love giving Vegemite to overseas guests and it never ends well. The ad is no longer available but you can read the article about it here and here.
