What should you use recycled water for in your home?

Modern homes in new areas in Australia now come with recycled water piping allowing you to save on your water bill by using recycled water for certain uses. This is not safe for human consumption so, these are the ways you can use it.

Washing Machine

Your washing machine can use recycled water for washing your clothes. You’re not going to eat or drink off your clothes, so recycled water is generally used for washing your clothes. It’s just going to get detergent added to it and sent back down the drain anyway.

Toilet Water

You don’t drink from your toilet, and hopefully, your pets don’t either. Modern toilets use recycled water.

Washing Your Car

Newer houses have a second outdoor tap which is usually painted purple to signify it is recycled water. This is designed for your outdoor garden use including washing your car.

Washing Your Driveway

No one should be hosing down your driveway, but some older people like to do this for some reason. If you insist on wasting water this way, please use recycled water.

Watering Your Plants

Use your purple tap for all your lawn and plant watering needs. You may like your plants, but they’re happy with the recycled stuff and you don’t need to waste your drinking water on them.

If you don’t have recycled water at your home and want to recycle your own water, you can keep a bucket in your shower and use the water on your garden or for other purposes. We do this to help flush cat poop down the toilet.
