What to Do if You Lose Your Keys?

What to Do if You Lose Your Keys?

So, you’ve lost your keys. Here’s what not to do: Don’t panic. Getting flustered won’t help you sort out the situation faster; in fact, it will probably just stress you out and make you even less cool, calm and capable of handling it.

Stay with us as we take you through what to do if you lose your keys.

So, You’ve Locked Yourself Out

We’ve all been there: coming home from a late night on the town, and realising, with a sinking feeling in your stomach, that your night out has come to an incredibly messy end.

“Where’s my wallet?” you ask yourself. “Where’s my phone…. Oh my goodness, where are my keys?!”

Yes, what was supposed to be a fun evening has ended in the worst possible way: locking yourself out of your home. Tired, sweaty, and maybe even still a little tipsy, all you want is a hot shower and bed.

Yes, the last thing you need to deal with is this locked-out situation. But the reality is that your keys are nowhere to be found. You’ve really lost them.

What’s next?

Next Steps: What Do I Do Now?

As we mentioned earlier, by all means, do not panic. You don’t need to break in and climb through your window, although that is one option. (We don’t recommend it, though.)

No, the good news is that help is at hand: you can easily make a quick call to a nearby locksmith in Dandenong or an area close to you. If they’re a 24-hour, emergency locksmith, they’ll be at your door in no time, and you’ll soon be in that shower and underneath your warm doona.

Lesson Learned: How to Avoid This Happening Next Time

So, you’ve learned your lesson. Does that mean you’ll have a slightly less chaotic night next time, though? Possibly not. If so, and you feel like you might inevitably lose your keys again, here are some tips to avoid getting locked out.

Our first idea? You could store a spare set of keys in a safe place, hidden out of plain sight (and no, we don’t mean under your doormat). Try hiding it inside a fake rock, for example, or amongst the foliage of a house plant near your door.

If you don’t trust that option, and let’s be honest, it’s not fail-safe (it’s rather obvious and makes it easy for burglars to break in), there are other options. Consider installing a high-tech smart door instead. With an electronic locking system installed, all you’ll need is your smartphone to unlock your door.

Of course, this means you’ll need to take care of your belongings while you’re out. You’ll need to be sure to keep an eye on your phone, making sure it’s still in your pocket when you get home to unlock your front door.

We’ve all done silly things. Not least, leaving our keys behind during a night out on the town.

But as discussed today, there are things you can do when you’ve locked yourself out, as well as ways you can avoid it happening again.

As mentioned, calling a local locksmith is probably your best bet, especially if you don’t feel like climbing into your house through a window. In future, having a secret hidden key can also help, as can installing a smart door.

But our best tip? Avoid excessively crazy nights. Try to keep yourself – and your belongings – in check. That way, you can ensure you get home with your pockets still full of your wallet, phone, and, most importantly, your keys.
