It isn’t too often that Hungry Jack’s adds a new side dish. I know they have changed their shoestring fries to thick-cut fries and replaced their traditional little onion rings with new pub-style ones in recent years. But not much else has joined the menu other than these changes and a few limited items such as Chicken Bites and Chicken Fries. In fact. They’ve taken away my favourite Hungry Jack’s side – the Angry Onions, so to have a new permanent option here is highly welcome.
What are Gravy Tatos Bites?
These are described as “deep-fried delicious mashed potato and gravy coated in a crispy, crumbed and well-seasoned bite-sized ball – an old fave with a twist!” on the Hungry Jack’s website. These have been a Limited Time promotion in the past, but I’m under the impression that they’ve returned in July 2023 as a permanent option to compete with the OG Mashies at KFC that came back in May, a very similar product, without the gravy inside.
How Much Do They Cost?
I bought a pack of 6 for $5.95, so they cost about $1 each. They are also available as a pack of 3 with chips in the “3 Gravy Tatos Carry Cup” which appears to be about a Medium Fries worth of chips with 3 potato balls inside a Large Fries container. These are now also part of one of the family deals called Gravy Tatos Mega Faeast Bundle, which includes 2 large burgers (default is Whopper with Cheese), 4 smaller burgers (two Cheeseburgers and two Chicken Royales by default), 4 small chips and 4 small drinks.

Hungry Jacks Gravy Tatos Bites Review
I’ll lead by saying, I’m a big fan. These are crispy on the outside, soft in the middle. The burst of gravy adds a change of texture and removes the need to dip this otherwise dry snack into the sauce. Think of it as self-saucing. The potato itself does seem a bit like instant mashed potato mix, or pre-made mashed potatoes from a supermarket, but I don’t mind that. The gravy itself is pretty good, it reminds me of the dark brown packet mix gravy by Gravox.
I compare it to the Gravox mix, as opposed to the lighter brown gravy that KFC sells, since KFC is the natural comparison with their Mashies. Perhaps this is would be considered a beef gravy produced instead of a chicken gravy product. I don’t know much about gravy.
I prefer these to chips or onion rings, so I’ll generally get these over those when possible going forward!
